Preparing your Child for School

One month of summer vacation has come and gone. The school marquee tells us that registration is coming up. School supplies are lining the shelves at local stores. Your child's new teacher has been preparing for school since June.

The teachers have listed some of the science and social studies topics they will introduce next year. You can access these lists by clicking the "PARENTS" tab at the right. Successful students possess background knowledge and vocabulary of these subjects. By selecting the "READING" tab you will access reading passages that will give your child the opportunity to gain this knowledge.

In the Reading Lab, the teachers have a saying, "Read it once. Read it twice. Read it until it sounds really nice." Repeated readings are one of the best ways to promote fluency - you know - "Practice makes perfect!"  Have your child read the passages several times.

This blog is a work in progress. Letters to parents, activities, and ideas will be added as the year progresses. Be sure to check back often.
